About the Dance
The Kathak dance technique
The dance is traditionally performed solo, by a male or female artiste on a stage surrounded on all sides by the audience. Imagine intricate footwork, 100 or so ankle bells, pirouettes executed at lightning speed, statuesque poses and fast rhythmic footwork set to complex time cycles. The dance itself is based on the tales of Radha, Krishna and Hindu mythological lore and themes from Persian and Urdu poetry comprising subtle gestures and facial expressions, costumes like those in Mughal miniature paintings; and dancer and percussionist complementing each other in a virtuoso display of rhythmic wizardry.
Bollywood Dance Sessions
The classes comprise putting the participants through paces on a contemporary Bollywood Dance numbers. The dancing includes steps from classical dances, Indian folk dancing and more contemporary dances from India states and the West. It is hoped that through these sessions, participants will be able to develop an understanding of the aesthetics and rhythms of Indian dancing as well as enjoy the benefits of health, fitness and general wellbeing.
