Laughter Yoga Class

Saturday, 27 April 2:00 – 3:00pm

WHAT IS LAUGHTER YOGA? LY is a unique form of exercise with many physical, mental and emotional health benefits. It involves unconditional laughter, breathing and youthful playfulness.

WHO IS IT FOR? The simple answer is - if you can laugh, you can do Laughter Yoga - so it’s suitable for pretty much anyone age 14 and up (though minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult). There are a few medical conditions that are considered contraindications for Laughter Yoga - see below. No past experience or special equipment is needed.

IS IT LIKE NORMAL YOGA? Yes and No. There are no bending, stretching or yoga ‘poses’ that require you to be flexible or that challenge your balance but it IS like normal yoga in the sense that a class Leader guides you through various (laughter) exercises, easy breathing patterns and very simple movements whilst encouraging you to do these in a mindful way.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DOING LAUGHTER YOGA? There are many health and wellbeing benefits to LY, both physiological and psychological - too many to mention in detail here - but briefly, the FIVE main benefits are:

1. ELEVATES MOOD - LY can change your mood within minutes by releasing endorphins from your brain cells. This makes you feel good and if you are in a good mood you do everything well. It makes you feel cheerful throughout the day.

2. HEALTH BENEFITS - LY reduces stress and strengthens the immune system. If your immune system is strong you will not fall sick easily and if you have chronic health conditions it will help you to heal faster.

3. FUNCTIONAL BENEFITS - Our brain needs plenty of oxygen for optimal functioning. Laughter exercises can increase the net supply of oxygen to our body and brain which helps to improve efficiency, cognitive abilities and performance. You will feel more energetic and your capacity for thinking and working without getting tired increases.

4. SOCIAL CONNECTOR - Quality of life depends upon the quality of our relationships with friends and family. Laughter is a great connector and facilitates making new friendships and strengthening existing ones, especially important after all the recent lockdowns and isolation that many people have experienced.

5. LAUGHING THROUGH CHALLENGES - Anyone can laugh when times are good, but LY teaches people to laugh unconditionally so that they can laugh even when times are hard. It provides strength in adversity, a coping mechanism to help people keep a positive mental attitude regardless of circumstances

ARE THERE ANY CONDITIONS THAT PREVENT SOMEONE FROM DOING LAUGHTER YOGA? LY is like any other aerobic exercise and all the conditions apply in the same way as they would to swimming, jogging, running, etc. Should you experience any pain, discomfort or breathlessness, you must discontinue Laughter Yoga and seek medical advice.

People with the following conditions should take medical advice before doing Laughter Yoga:

  • Hernia

  • Incontinence (urinary or faecal)

  • Uncontrolled bleeding

  • Heart problems with chest pain

  • Pregnancy

  • Severe (bleeding) piles

  • Serious mental health conditions

  • Major surgery - wait at least 3 months and seek medical advice before doing LY

  • Epilepsy

  • Severe back pain

SUMMARY:

You don't need any previous experience nor do you need to wear special yoga clothes or have any equipment (like a mat). Just turn up...laugh...feel great! Easy.
